Shi literally means finger and atsu means pressure. As with acupuncture, Shiatsu practitioners work with the 361 points along the 12 meridians of energy in the body. While the client lies dressed in loose comfortable clothing on a futon on the floor, the practitioner uses her hands, elbows, knees, and feet to release or enhance the flow of energy throughout the body. This is done with techniques that include gentle stretching, yoga postures, rocking or rotational movements, percussion, and vibrations. Ultimately, Shiatsu is all about the mind-body connection to health and well being. The practitioner merely acts as a facilitator in this healing process. With repetitive sessions, this mind-body connection deepens, thus further enhancing the body’s own healing capabilities.
A regular client boasts: “Shiatsu has become my preventative health maintenance plan! I so look forward to my monthly visits. They have become a sacred time of relaxation and rejuvenation for me. The release of pent-up energy I experience is euphoric. You always make me feel very nurtured and supported. I always leave our sessions with a solid sense of well-being. I want to thank you for being such a skilled practitioner in the art of Shiatsu massage. Your care has made a difference in my life!”
